Interview With an Artist

Over the last four years or so, I have been interviewing all types of artists for Austin-Artists.  Austin-Artists provides insight into local artisans and the amazing works that they create. Visual artists, culinary artists, musicians and other performing artists showcase their works and tell their story, providing insight and inspiration to our visitors and their fans. The interview can then be viewed on-line by anyone. These are the fascinating people and stories that make Austin…Austin!

My role is conducting the interview and making sure that the artist feels relaxed and comfortable. Being in front of the camera can be a bit intimidating no matter what you tell yourself. I know. I was our test subject when we first started doing this. I realized  then what it felt like to be in front of the camera and suddenly feel nervous or lose your train of thought. I try to make the artist feel more like we are having a conversation and not like he or she is being interrogated.

I truly enjoy doing this because I feel like I am collaborating with the artist and the videographer to create a very important piece of art – a story.

The longer we listen to one another – with real attention – the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.” Barbara Deming
